A new option for the treatment of aortic stenosis: percutaneous aortic valve replacement.

Increasing evidence indicates that the disease is accelerated by the same factors that affect coronary artery disease, including smoking, hypercholesterolemia, hyper tension, and diabetes. Until now, surgical valve replacement, pioneered in the 1960s with mechanical or tissue prostheses, was the only effective treatment available to alleviate signs and symptoms and prolong life in patients with severe aortic stenosis. Surgical aortic valve replacement improves quality of life and prognosis, but the procedure is a high-risk one for patients of advanced age who have multisystem dysfunction and calcific aortic stenosis. Interventional cardiology is rapidly evolving to include innovative approaches to manage valvular heart disease. In 2002, Cribier et al reported the first successful human percutaneous aortic valve implantation done via an antegrade Sandra Lauck, RN, MSN, CCN(C) Martha Mackay, RN, MSN, CCN(C) Carol Galte, MSN, NP(F), CCN(C) Margot Wilson, RN, MSN, CCN(C)

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: A Review Article
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a novel therapeutic intervention for the replacement of severely stenotic aortic valves in high-risk patients for standard surgical procedures. Since the initial PARTNER trial results, use of TAVR has been on the rise each year. New delivery methods and different valves have been developed and modified in order to promote the minimally invasive p...

Introduction: With the development of interventional cardiology in the world, in addition to coronary and aortic diseases, the treatment of heart valve diseases through catheters has recently begun. The treatment of aortic stenosis (which was only possible with open surgery and valve replacement) was first performed in the world in 2002 by Alain Cribier in France with catheter insertion of the ...
متن کاملBicuspid Aortic Valve: An Unusual Cause of Aneurysm of Left Coronary Sinus of Valsalva
Bicuspid aortic valve is traditionally considered an innocuous congenital anomaly. Due to a better and widespread availability of non-invasive imaging techniques, it has come to the fore that 30% of these cases develop complications, viz., valve abnormality (aortic regurgitation and stenosis), and aneurysm of aortic root and ascending aorta. Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm is an uncommon complicatio...
متن کاملCoronary artery disease and aortic stenosis in the transcatheter aortic valve replacement era: old questions, new paradigms: the evolving role of percutaneous coronary intervention in the treatment of patients with aortic stenosis.
Significant coronary artery disease (CAD) is present in up to 50% of patients with symptomatic aortic stenosis (AS). Although numerous databases have shown that the addition of bypass grafting to an aortic valve replacement (AVR) nearly doubles the mortality, surgical series have shown that leaving significant coronary stenosis untreated increases AVR mortality.1–4 Thus, the standard of care fo...
متن کاملIndication for percutaneous aortic valve implantation
The incidence of valvular aortic stenosis has increased over the past decades due to improved life expectancy. Surgical aortic valve replacement is currently the only treatment option for severe symptomatic aortic stenosis that has been shown to improve survival. However, up to one third of patients who require lifesaving surgical aortic valve replacement are denied surgery due to high comorbid...
